Follow these five steps to prepare for a career.

Step 1: Self-assessment. Who am I? Try these sites to discover more about yourself.

Career Development eManual This University of Waterloo site will help you conduct a complete assessment of your personality, interests, values, skills, learning needs and self-employment potential.

The Career Key A free interactive self-assessment quiz that matches your strongest personality characteristics with appropriate jobs.

Ohio Mentor A comprehensive career exploration site. Self-assessment tools and lists of careers by occupational cluster.

Transferable Skills Survey Rate your skills on this site from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Quest Take Quest's interest inventory to identify careers and college majors related to your interests.

Step 2: Research and Goal Setting. Where am I going? These sites can help you discover the wide range of work available and learn about the specifics of a particular job.

O*NET OnLine Find occupations by keyword, a list of your skills, or view the complete list! A U.S. Department of Labor site.

Career Voyages Research occupations, hot jobs by state, and videos about many careers. This site is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education.

JobProfiles.org Read what people working in specific jobs have to say about those jobs.

Military Career Guide Find out about 4100 military jobs. 80% of military personnel serve in non-combat occupations.

America's CareerInfoNet Research occupations, watch videos of workers in various careers, discover where you can get training and financial aid.

Step 3: Develop an Action Plan. How will you get a job in your chosen career? Learn about the education or training needed at these sites. Also find out about resume writing, networking, and interviewing.

Majors and Career Series Indiana University presents an excellent site that allows you to find college majors that relate to your areas of interest.

Step 4: Get Practical Experience. This could take the form of a cooperative education experience, an internship, a summer job, or volunteer work.

Step 5: Search for a Job.

Monster.com A widely-used site for posting job openings and searching for available jobs.
