Granting of credit Counseling services
Graduation requirements Board of Education policies
Scheduling conflicts Local college/university options

Program eligibility:

Students enrolled in grades nine through twelve are eligible to participate. A state rule requires that students indicate their intention to participate in the program  to Northmont City Schools by March 26 of the preceding school year. It is the responsibility of each participating college or university to set admission standards for potential participants and notify each applicant of their acceptance into the program. Please check with your counselor for more detailed information on the admission requirements of each college and university. One uniform requirement set by the state of Ohio is that the student must have a "B" average at Northmont in the subject area of the course they wish to take at the college.

Program options:

Option "A" permits eligible students to enroll in college courses for college credit. Students electing this option will be required to pay all costs incurred, including tuition, books, materials, and fees.
Option "B" permits eligible students to enroll in college courses for college and high school credit. Students electing this option will not be required to pay for tuition, books, materials, or fees associated with such courses.

Financial arrangements:

For those students enrolled in college courses for college credit under option "A", the college will notify the student about payment of tuition and fees as it would any other enrolled student.
For those students enrolled in college courses for college and high school credit under option "B", the college will be reimbursed for tuition, fees, materials, and textbooks from the money that the state contributes to that student's education at Northmont. In addition, students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches may request transportation expense reimbursement.
Any student who drops a class or fails a class at a college when participating in this program must reimburse all costs to Northmont City Schools.

Transportation:

Transportation to and from the college is the responsibility of the student and parents (except as stated above under financial arrangements).

Granting of credit:

Students participating under option "B" will have high school credits assigned based upon a conversion table available for review in the counseling center at the high school. The following general guidelines are followed:
    5 semester hours=1credit
    3 semester hours=1/2 credit
    7.5 quarter hours=1 credit
    3.75 quarter hours=1/2 credit
Fractional credits will be awarded proportionately.

Graduation requirements:

High school graduation requirements shall not be waived for any student participating in this program. In order to participate in the high school graduation ceremony, all college coursework that is a part of the student's required courses for graduation must be completed and final grades submitted to the counselor's office before the graduation ceremony.

Scheduling  conflicts:

The high school counselors will make an attempt to assist the student in designing a schedule that accommodates the desired high school and college courses. However, schedule conflicts of college courses, high school courses, and school activities are not the responsibility of the Northmont City Schools.

Potential benefits:

Students may be able to enroll in college courses that provide further "in depth" study in subject areas of special interest. College credit may be earned for this course work. These courses may be paid for by the school district. Thus, the student experiences college level work and a sampling of college life prior to making a final decision about where to attend college following high school.

Potential risks and consequences:

Any college course taken may interfere with high school activities. In addition, there will be increased time required for study and travel. High school students may find that they have an increased responsibility for independent learning. The college setting may prove to be socially uncomfortable for some students. Both grade point average and class rank may be adversely affected.

Activity and Athletic eligibility:

Students enrolled in a PSEO program are eligible for activity/athletic participation provided they meet all of the guidelines established for such participation by the Northmont Board of Education and the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Grade point average:

All college courses taken under option "B" will be included in the grade point average and class rank calculation.

Counseling services:

State rules governing the PSEO program require that students who apply to participate in the program and their parents receive counseling regarding all of the information provided above. Please contact your Northmont counselor to schedule an appointment for this purpose.

Board of Education policies:

All Northmont Board of Education policies are applicable to students enrolled in the PSEO program.
