At Northmont High School we are dedicated to providing our students with every opportunity possible to graduate from high school prepared to compete and excel in their future aspirations. Summer school allows students to take courses that are required for graduation in a condensed, six-week time frame so that they have more room in their schedule to take electives and other advanced coursework during the school year. This allows students to take more classes that directly relate to their college and career goals and prepares them for their future. Due to the current situation with the Coronavirus, we will offer summer school on-line this year.
The summer school fee is $200 for 6 week courses and $100 for 3 week courses. Please mail the payment to Northmont High School c/o Chrissy Harris at 4916 West National Road, Clayton, OH 45315. Checks should be made payable to Northmont High School. Free and reduced rates apply for students who qualify for free and reduced lunches. Summer school dates are June 1st - July 10th (no school on July 3rd). The first 3 weeks, June 1 - June 19 (8:00 am - 12:00 pm) and the 2nd three weeks, June 22 - July 10 (8:00 am - 12:15 pm). Please reach out to your child’s counselor with any questions that you might have.
We encourage our entering freshmen who would like to start high school ahead of schedule to take advantage of the following on-line courses:
World History: This 6 week course is traditionally taken during the freshman year. Taking this course over the summer allows freshmen to add an elective that they would otherwise not be able to take.
Health: Health is traditionally taken during the sophomore year, which can often be a very busy year for students. Therefore, we encourage students in 10th grade to take this course in summer school as well.
Physical Education: This 3 week course allows those students who do not plan to participate in 2 seasons of Northmont sports, marching band, or ROTC to take their required PE course. This allows students to take an elective of their choice their freshman year. We also encourage students in 10th grade to take this course in summer school as well.
For current high school students, the following on-line courses will also be offered:
Language Arts 9/10/11 (Remediation/credit recovery w/prior Guidance approval)
Mathematics: Independent Algebra 9/10/11, Independent Geometry 10/11
(Prior Guidance and Math Department approval is needed for proper placement.)
For current high school students, for the third year, we will be offering pre-calculus. Taking this course will open a pathway for students to take additional Advanced Placement, honors, and College Credit Plus (CCP) coursework in high school. Taking advanced level courses provides an advantage for students with respect to increasing their ACT score as well as gaining entrance to more prestigious colleges.
Pre-calculus: This is a 7 week on-line course designed for those students that have shown excellent aptitude and motivation in math. In order to be eligible, a student must have maintained an A or B in Algebra II Advanced, and he or she must have been recommended for pre-calculus.
We are very excited about these summer opportunities. It is important to note that, if a student chooses to take a high school course the summer before their freshman year, their grade in that course will be a part of their high school transcript. For this reason, we want to emphasize how important it is for students who choose this option to be dedicated and ready for the challenge.
